So we travelled to Cambodia on a 10 hour bus trip from Bangkok to Siem Reap.
It took us to the border and we walked through, no real security, the the bus took us to the capital. You could tell the difference straight away. The roads wern't as smooth and all along the way, the view was greener and more rice fields.
The first day we did a trip to Angkor Wat which is a ancient buddist temple. We were advised to do the sunrise trip and left at 4am!!!! It was pretty cloudy that day so the sunrise wasn't too spectacular. The temples were thou. We hired a cart driver for $10 all day and he drove us to 7 temples and markets and toi the hotel. It was great!!
It started to rain though, he bought us some macs, aww bless him.
All the local children and market stalls were selling fake copy DVD's of Tomb Raider and the guide saide they filmed it in one of the Temples. I guess thats where Angelina Jolie first saw the Cambodians and decided to adopt one.
They are poor but they are so friendly and flattered you have come to see their country. They are harmless. Unlike the thai's, who want you to buy everything in their shops and take you the 1hour route to get 15mins away!
We stayed over at the Babel guesthouse, everyone's English is perfect and all have American accents from watching hollywood movies.
We got a tuc tuc for 50p to bar street. It was full of white people and nice restaurants. There was Indian, Italian, Tex Mex, anything you like. We opted for Cambodian (when in Rome...) and they had traditioanl dancers and music on the stage while you eat. Quite an nice night. Then of all the places in the world, right passed my table walks my friend Gordon from the Motorshow!! I couldn't believe it, a friend from London, in the same restaurant! We took ages to pick too and could've eaten anywhere! How strange we picked the same place. That was nice to see, he's been backpacking for 6 months. Alot browner than me...ha ha
We travelled again by bus, to Phnom Penh the next day which wasn't as nice. No one really spoke fluent English, just broken words. The hostel wasn't as nice and it was grubbier. But still all experience....
We spent our second day in Cambodia doing a Pol Pot tour. It was so grim :(
We went to see the killing fields and graves, a tourture school and the worst bit was the library! They had taken photos and documented each persons details before they killed them. They only recently discovered all the millions of files and had thousands of pictures on display. Some people were smiling as they didn't know what the photo was for. Very sad.
We tried to cheer ourselves up by going to a local market and we've booked our next coach trip.... VIETNAM here we come!!!
