Kamloops
We had been warned that Kamloops wasn't a particularly nice town to visit. We were told this by a German guy who was staying at our B&B in Banff. He had stayed one night on his Rocky Mountaineer trip. We had scheduled 2 nights in a conference hotel and had a look to see if we could change this a bit and have another night a bit nearer Vancouver.
As it turned out we had a great time on our way to Kamloops, in the Kamloops area and in the town itself. I think that the German had been trying to get his own back for Brexit. We had plenty of time on our way to Kamloops and the Thompson Valley was very beautiful to drive through. We were tempted off off road by a sign offering cheap golf. We pulled off to investigate and there was Ruth and Janette offering us coffee, clubs and 9 holes of golf with a cart all for a very acceptable price. The clubs turned out to be a bit naff but once we got the hang of them we found our old silky smooth swings again. It was a very nice little course, full of interest - much like Carrbridge.
We rolled into Kamloops around 4:30pm on a Sunday afternoon. Everything was closed. We checked into or hotel which turned out to be very nice indeed with a pool and very friendly staff. The Rocky Mountaineers rolled into the hotel at 5:30pm worn out from the excitement of their journey from Vancouver. They were due to leave at 6:15am the following morning so they wouldn't get much time to explore Kamloops.
We had spotted the opportunity to explore the nearby Sun Peaks Resort by Segway. Sun City was deserted too. We were between the summer season and the winter snow sports season and the place was dead. However, we managed to find the Segway shop and, having refreshed the skills learned 5 years ago on the streets of Rome, we were soon on our way with Gemma who owned the business. We scurried around the golf course and then off into the woods take a look at the local lake. Arriving back in Sun Peaks before our allotted 3 hours were up, Gemma took us off piste up into the ski slopes for more views of Sun Peaks and some very steep climbs and descents. Gemma described us as the "Dream Team" for our Segway skills and have a go attitude.
Back in Kamloops we found the riverside park where the North and South Thompson rivers joined. The locals were out enjoying the early Fall sunshine, taking some exercise and having some fun. We watched the Rocky Mountaineer roll into town to be welcomed by two cowboys on horseback. Another great photo-opertunity.
Kamloops and district were very nice indeed. Our hotel was good, we found 2 great restaurants, the sun shone throughout and the cowboys gave us a badge.
